Market outlook, Despicable Me 4: Market Domination Overtime

2024-07-08
US stocks (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) close out Monday mixed, but it's not all bad as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite post new record highs and the Dow Jones Industrial Average is just barely below its flatline. It's the end of the trading day and Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton are here to recap the day's biggest market trends as part of Market Domination Overtime. LPL Financial chief technical strategist Adam Turnquist comes onto the program to talk why he is being careful on buying the dip, but not encouraging investors to chase the market rally. Turnquist ultimately calls the equity environment a "Field of Dreams bull market." Yahoo Finance entertainment reporter Alexandra Canal joins Market Domination OT to discuss AMC Entertainment's (AMC) stock boost in relation to Despicable Me 4's box office performance. US labor market, meme stock trade, Boeing: Market Domination

2024-07-05
Markets may have been closed yesterday for the Fourth of July, but stocks (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) are looking reinvigorated at the end of July's first trading week. Josh Lipton and Jared Blikre are here to guide investors through the final trading hour of July 5 in today's installment of Market Domination. The program welcomes on tastylive CEO Tom Sosnoff, who ponders whether the current meme stock trade can sustain itself or if it will fade back again like in 2021. Oppenheimer chief investment strategist John Stoltzfus discusses how the Federal Reserve may be interpreting June's jobs data in relation to economic fortitude and its monetary policy. Other top trending stocks include Boeing (BA), as reports indicate Justice Department officials could be prepping to charge the airline manufacturer with fraud; Big Lots (BIG) is closing more US store locations; and bitcoin (BTC-USD) takes a hit lower after defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox begins repaying customers. This post was written by Luke Carberry Mogan.

Could Gladiator II and Wicked be the next 'Barbenheimer'?

2024-07-05
It's the summer of sequels at the box office, with Disney's (DIS) Inside Out 2 crossing the $500 million mark domestically and Despicable Me 4 opening strong with $27 million. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian joins Asking for a Trend to break down some of the key themes hitting movie theaters this summer. Dergarabedian notes that the box office had a rather slow start to the summer, however, it started to pick up in early June with Bad Boys: Ride or Die opening beyond expectations at around $57.5 million. Then, animated features Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 helped pick up momentum as the industry recovers from its pandemic slump and last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. He adds that going to the theater is "relatively inexpensive to other outside-of-the-home activities," and it provides a "communal and immersive experience" compared to streaming movies at home. He points to the "Barbenheimer" craze last year as an excellent example of a communal experience and viral moment driving people to theaters. As Wicked and Gladiator II are both set to release on November 22 in the US, there could be another double-feature moment that emulates what happened with Barbie and Oppenheimer.
