The majority of the more than 20,000 employees of OMV work at the Group's integrated European sites.
In Upstream, OMV focuses on the exploration, development and production of oil and gas in four core regions: (1) Central and Eastern Europe, (2) the North Sea, (3) the Middle East and Africa and (4) Russia. At the end of 2017, the Upstream business was active in 15 countries worldwide, with safe reserves (1p) of 1.15 bn boe and safe and probable reserves (2p) of 1.94 bn boe. More than 80% of production in 2017 was funded in EU / OECD countries. While natural gas contributed 48% to production, crude oil reached 52%.
The Downstream Business Unit comprises Downstream Oil and Downstream Gas. The downstream oil business operates three refineries: Schwechat (Austria) and Burghausen (southern Germany), both of which have integrated petrochemical production, and the Petrobrazi refinery (Romania), which processes predominantly Romanian crude oil. OMV has an annual refining capacity of 17.8 million t. The total sales volume of refinery products amounted to 23.82 million tonnes in 2017 (2016: 30.74 million tonnes). The retail network consists of 2,039 gas stations in 10 countries with a strong multi-brand portfolio.
In downstream gas, natural gas sales volumes in 2017 were 113 TWh (2016: 109 TWh). OMV operates a gas pipeline network in Austria and gas storage facilities with a capacity of 2.7 billion m³ (31 TWh). The Central European Gas Hub (CEGH) is an established gas trading platform. The natural gas hub in Baumgarten (Austria) is the largest hub for Russian gas in Central Europe. OMV operates two gas-fired power plants, one in Romania and one in Turkey.
Since 2015, OMV has successfully restructured its core business. The disciplined handling of financial resources has significantly improved the profitability of the business. In a volatile market environment, the integrated business model in particular provided stability. With the Strategy 2025, OMV will extend this proven concept to international markets in order to continue to grow in value.
